It All Starts With Measurements...
A few minutes with a measuring tape can save a lot of guesswork. Taking accurate measurements helps you choose the right pattern size and gives you a better starting point for a comfortable fit.
Before You Begin
Grab a flexible measuring tape and measure over underwear or thin, fitted clothing. Stand naturally and breathe normally, using a mirror if you’re measuring solo, or asking a friend to check that the tape stays level and snug without squeezing.
How To:
Measure Your Bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust or chest, keeping it parallel to the floor all the way around your back. Relax your shoulders and lower your arms before reading the number. (A friend can help hold the tape in place while you do this.)
How To:
Measure Your Waist
Measure around your natural waist, which is usually the narrowest part of your torso. You can find it by gently bending to one side and noticing where your body creases. Stand upright again before measuring, and keep your belly relaxed while you or your friend reads the tape.

Measure Your Hips
With your feet together, wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and bottom. Check the tape in a mirror or have your friend check it from the side to make sure it stays level, then record the measurement without bending forward.

Compare your measurements with the size chart for your chosen pattern rather than relying on your usual clothing size. If you fall between sizes, choose the larger size – it’s generally easier to take a garment in than add room later – and if your measurements span several sizes, use the largest size needed for the areas your garment fits.
